Caine’s Arcade (All Grades)

Overview:
Inspired by the short film, Caine’s Arcade and Caine’s Arcade 2, students imagined, designed and created their own cardboard games. The students participated in a Day of Play as part of the Imagination Foundation's Global Cardboard Challenge. Last year, over 80,000 children participated in over 40 countries around the world. During three GATE classes, students learned about the importance of collaboration, creating prototypes, testing and refining as part of the design process.

Objectives Stated by Imagination Foundation (2014):
“We put on the Global Cardboard Challenge because it:
  • engages children in creative play
  • fosters creativity, ingenuity, resourcefulness, perseverance and teamwork
  • gives children an opportunity to explore their interests and passions, and make things that have an impact on others
  • provides a platform for communities to actively foster and celebrate child creativity
  • increases global happiness and makes for a happier, more playful world.
  • is FUN!"

Additional GATE Objectives:
  • Learn the steps of the design process: Ask Questions, Imagine, Design/Build, Test (repeat), refine and celebrate.
  • Utilize problem-solving skills to improve prototypes.
  • Encourage and develop collaborative skills to assist in the design process.

Resources and Opportunities to Explore More:
Watch the YouTube videos ‘Caine’s Arcade’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faIFNkdq96U) and ‘Caine’s Arcade 2’ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ul9c-4dX4Hk) with your child to better understand the purpose of the Imagination Foundation. Students were encouraged to build a full-sized arcade game or any type of cardboard structure at home and invite friends or family members to play together on in the Fourth Annual Global Challenge on October 10. If inspired, families or organizations may want to host a day of play on October 10 by registering at www.cardboardchallenge.com. Have fun!
