Students in the participated in the Marshmallow Challenge and performed better than the average adult teams! The Marshmallow Challenge, created by Peter Skillman for TED, seems like a simple design exercise with the goal of creating the tallest freestanding structure constructed from 20 spaghetti sticks, one yard of tape, one yard of string with one single marshmallow at the top in 18 minutes.
The top three LCUSD teams all designed structures taller than the average of 20 inches, with Palm Crest Elementary School’s 4th grade at 23 1/2”, Paradise Canyon Elementary School’s 5th graders at a close 23”, followed by La Canada Elementary School’s 4th grade team at 21”. All three top groups outperformed the average CEO's of major corporations and recent business school graduates. Please go to the Lesson page to learn more about the Marshmallow Challenge.
